Jess Slater
American
Jess Everett Slater (1910-2004), a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, was an artist who reveled in the beauty of New England's different seasons. He was a student of Marco Zim (1880-1963), a noted sculptor who taught him the fundamentals of drawing and painting in oil. Slater believed in representational painting, not too literal but easily understood, with respect for the essentials of drawing, color, values and composition. His landscapes have a moody atmospheric quality and tonality not unlike the paintings of Grant Wood.
Largely self-taught in watercolors and acrylics, he became an award-winning watercolorist exhibiting throughout the country. Slater's watercolors can be found in the books The Best of Watercolor; Places in Watercolor; and The Best of Watercolor, 3.
